Hello, Ayotovites 👋

Today I want to talk to you about a concept that has recently begun to be heard more and more actively in the industry - Ambient IoT . This is not just another buzzword, but potentially the next step in the evolution of the Internet of Things. And the more I delve into the topic, the more interesting it becomes. But let's take it in order ( as usual, let's start with IoT and end with security and its lack )

What is Ambient IoT? 🤯

Ambient IoT is the idea that every object around us can be connected to a network. Not a smartphone, not a camera, not a light bulb. And, for example, a box of medicines, food packaging, a pallet in a warehouse - literally everything. The idea is to use tiny autonomous sensors that are powered by radio waves ( yes, no batteries ), turn even the cheapest objects into a source of information about yourself: where they are, in what condition, how long the journey is, etc.

The Bluetooth SIG estimates the potential for Ambient IoT to reach more than 10 trillion devices. Sounds crazy? Welcome to the future 😮

Where is it already used? 🤨

For example, a company Wiliot does "IoT Pixels" — tags the size of a postage stamp. They do not have batteries, but they can collect and transmit data via Bluetooth Low Energy, powered by radio signals on the air. Such tags are already used in logistics, pharmacy chains, retail and even agricultural technology. You can embed such a “pixel” into the packaging and know where the product is, whether the temperature has been violated or the box has been opened ( I'm already in January told about something similar at wineries, when I myself visited production in Gelendzhik ). And all this without charging, SIM cards or any infrastructure reboot

It would seem ideal. But... what about security? 💀

This is where the fun begins. Ambient IoT devices are so small and simple that... they cannot afford normal cryptographic security methods ( in general, this is a problem with all IoT devices, but here the case is even more critical ). Encryption? Authentication? Digital signature? All this is either absent or assigned to the “infrastructure”. Now imagine an attack: an attacker places fake tags, replaces supply chain data, imitates the availability of goods - and no one notices. 🫢

Currently, 3GPP, IEEE and Bluetooth SIG are working on security standards, but Ambient IoT is developing faster than specifications can be agreed upon. This is the classic story of “first it’s convenient, then it’s safe.” We've already been through this. P Therefore, I personally still look at Ambient IoT with moderate skepticism: yes, technologically cool. But for now, security is not a foundation, but rather a “wish”

Still, the concept is powerful. This is no longer just a “smart home” - it is a “smart environment”. A true digital fog in which every object is a source of data. I believe that in a couple of years Ambient IoT will become an integral part of logistics, smart cities and retail. But only if information security specialists get involved (please ). Without this approach, all this will turn into 10 trillion potential threats 🤡

What do you think? Write in the comments if you would like to live in a world where absolutely everyone knows where it is, what is happening to it... and who you are 😵‍💫
