Hello, Ayotovites 👋

I recently came across a project that looks like a game, a simulation, a learning environment and... almost magic at the same time. It's called wokwi , and perhaps this is one of the most interesting things I have seen in the world of digital electronics in a long time 🤯

To describe it as simply as possible, this is a simulator for assembling and programming real devices, running directly in the browser. You don’t just “play” as an engineer, but actually assemble circuits from popular components ( ESP32, Arduino Uno, Raspberry Pi Pico and much more ), write code for them in C, MicroPython or even Rust, and... everything works. Right on the screen. Almost like in life 👨‍💻

I tried it. I liked it ( this is not advertising, they don't even know about my channel ). Because there are virtual boards, sensors and other components. In real time, you can test the operation of the entire circuit. It’s convenient to write code directly in the editor, which is similar to the familiar VS Code ( or JetBrains if you prefer IntelliJ-like environments ). There is even emulation of timers, ports and PWM. Everything is almost like on real hardware 😍

Who is this intended for? Yes, for everyone who at least once dreamed of understanding microcontrollers, but did not want to waste time ordering boards, a soldering iron, installing toolchains and drivers. I see this as an ideal tool:

🥺 for beginners to “touch” electronics without financial expenses
🤓 for students who did not have time/could not complete the lab before the deadline ( like if it was )
😎 for developers to test an idea on their knees without pulling out a box of ESPs

This is also a great thing for testing projects before live assembly. Are you thinking about automatic backlight control, a smart thermometer, or even a BLE device? Test it on Wokwi first, then move on to the breadboard 👍

Of course, all this also has its downsides - you won’t smell the melted flux and you won’t drop a soldering iron on your foot. But seriously, in some projects you will still run into the limitations of the emulator ( not everything can be fully tested without a physical environment ). But for 80% of scenarios - Wokwi is simple ❤‍🔥

If you've been wanting to start for a long time, but didn't know where to start, try it. And if you already know how, look at how you can prototype faster

Have you already tried similar simulators? Or is it still old school - just a soldering iron and a live board? Share in the comments. I wonder who studied how and who uses what now 😎
