👋The other day I saw a fairly recent study from March 2024. In the article
"A Systematic Review on Privacy-Aware IoT Personal Data Stores",published in the journal Sensors, the authors examine in detail the privacy concerns of the Internet of Things and propose
Personal Data Stores (PDS)as a possible solution
😮 What is PDS?😲
PDSare decentralized personal data stores that allow users to fully control any information about themselves. Instead of storing data on company servers, information is stored in local user storage
👍🤩In addition to the obvious advantage of the user’s full control over their data, such a solution could contribute to the implementation of all kinds of data protection laws (the same GDPR)
The authors conducted the analysis by selecting 49 studies from an initial 176 papers published up to 2023. The goal was to identify the main privacy issues in IoT
🤯💀The study itself identifies the following most important privacy risks in IoT systems:
✍️Linking personal data to identifiers (for example, name or address)
✍️Location monitoring via GPS or network data
✍️Create detailed profiles based on user activity
✍️Possible public disclosure of personal information.
✍️Risks when changing device ownership
✍️Unauthorized collection of user information by the manufacturer
✍️Data disclosure by attackers
Despite the growing attention to data privacy in IoT (almost
82% of studiesfrom 2018 to 2023), only in
two studieseffectively try on PDS
😱🤓 Why are PDS important?🤓
📈 Explosive growth of IoT devicesleads to massive data collection, increasing the risks of information leakage and misuse
🔭 Privacy vulnerabilityincreases due to the ability to link data from different sources
🛡 Companies and developerscan use PDS to increase user trust by providing more transparency and control
😎 What's the end result?😎The authors consider it necessary to conduct more in-depth research and active implementation
PDS technologiesin IoT systems. The authors also call for the development
decentralized and user-centricarchitectures for protecting privacy in IoT
👌😍It turns out that in a world where smart devices know everything about us,
Personal Data Stores
could be the key to taking back control of our data
What thoughts do you have on this matter?
🙏
