I recently came across news, that eSIM can now be obtained from MegaFon online, without going to the salon ( no, this is not an advertisement, because no one will buy it on a channel with so many subscribers ). In this regard, I decided to tell you in a little more detail what eSIM is and why this technology is also important for the Internet of Things 😊

First, let's understand what eSIM is

To put it very simply, an eSIM is the same chip as a regular plastic SIM card, only it is pre-soldered into the motherboard of a smartphone (or tablet, smart watch and other gadgets). What you receive is not the piece of plastic itself, but a QR code by which the operator “records” its profile into your eSIM

If we talk about the advantages of technology, I can highlight the following:
🪄 You can install several eSIM profiles (from different operators) on one device
Easily switch between them
🤩 No physical cards needed

So why is technology important to the Internet of Things?

Imagine different smart devices: from banal fitness trackers to industrial sensors, bicycle GPS trackers and smart electricity meters. Each such device must somehow be connected to the network in order to collect and transmit data. This is where eSIM can play the leading role. Although there are not many examples yet, they exist nonetheless. The same smart watches, for example, Apple Watch, have long supported this technology ( and yes, smartwatches are classified as personal Internet of Things devices ) 👍

Let's talk about eSIM in Russia 🇷🇺

Now eSIM can be obtained from almost all major operators - MTS, MegaFon, Tele2, Beeline. Most often, this can be done in the salon, but now it can be done remotely. To do this, they use the electronic signature service “Gosklyuch”, which from 2022 allows you not to appear at points of sale at all.
According to statistics, there are already about 4 million eSIM subscribers in Russia, and this figure continues to grow. Moreover, this is not only “individuals” who install eSIM on their smartphones. Communication is also moving into the B2B sector, into sensors, monitoring, smart devices and other IoT products

What do you say? Do you use eSIM or are you a dinosaur like me? 🦖
